Director’s Notes December 2016

Thanks to everyone last night for a lovely concert featuring the Gounod St Cecilia Mass and other seasonal music. The choir sounded splendid and the soloists Emma Peaurt, Stephen Newlove and Oliver Sammons added a special dimension.Thanks to the Philharmonia of North Wales, led by Rosie Skelton (who played the violin solo in the Gounod Meditation with real sensitivity) and Mared Emlyn who delighted us with the Handel Concerto for Harp – a real treat. All this could not have happened without the sterling work of those behind the scenes making everything possible under the watchful eye of Rita Thomas!
As for our esteemed organist, John Hosking, whilst filling out the orchestral sound and supporting the choir, I knew we would be in for a treat when I thought it fun to leave a gap for an organ cadenza in the encore, Ding Ding Merrily. I could tell he was watching me throughout as the moods were changing according to my reaction! Next time I will conduct the improvisation…
