History of the Society
In 1964 members of the congregation approached the cathedral organist and master
of choristers Dr Roland Middleton, to ask him to stage a performance of Handel's
Messiah in the cathedral at Christmas time. This event was so successful that he
decided to form a permanent choir, to be called the St Asaph Cathedral Choral Society.
Over forty years later members of the St Asaph Choral Society have performed over
one hundred concerts of both sacred and secular choral music.
The choir have always enjoyed close links with the cathedral: indeed four of its seven
conductors have held the post of Cathedral Organist and Master of the Choristers. Members are
aware of the privilege they enjoy in singing in the beautiful surroundings of the cathedral
and enjoying the splendid acoustics of the building.
The Society currently has eighty members drawn from St Asaph and the surrounding district
and their ages range from the twenties to the late eighties.
Under the baton of their new director and conductor, Graham Eccles, the members of the Society look
forward to many more years of choral singing together.
